About

A photography of Laken sitting against an old growth cedar, covered in lichen and moss. Laken has chest length hair, with blonde stripes in the front, copper red colour, and chocolate streaks underneath. They are wearing blue lined square shaped glasses and a dark forest green shirt that reads "we are the land and the land is us". On Laken's left arm is a tattoo of a cedar branch.

Hey, I’m Laken. My pronouns are they / them.

I am a deeply feeling artistic ethereal being searching for meaning amongst the complexity of this human experience. My art is who I am expressed and exemplified. I am always searching to show the beauty in the little things, the interconnectedness of everything, connection to nature, the magic that surrounds us, and the vulnerability / complexity of the human experience in all of its forms.

I primarily love to transform my dreams through the expression of art. In particular, I find joy through photography, writing (poetry, lyrics, novels), painting, composing, and performance art (drag, burlesque, slam poetry, etc.).

Creativity comes to me in many forms and I allow my passion and joy to guide me in how I play. I have also found joy within things such as ceramics, digital art, jewellery making, glass blowing, and more. Things I would love to try eventually: art installations, documentary making, murals, dance, and so on.

I hold various identities that affect how I approach my art, life, and how I show up in the space I take up. I am a Non-binary, Autistic, ADHD, Pansexual, and disabled human being living with chronic pain, autoimmune diseases, and cPTSD. The lived experience of these parts of me often feature in my work, calling for liberation for all from oppressive systems.

Working with and within nature is at the heart of what I create and how I live my life. I was born as a Celtic and Scandinavian settler on Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinaabe territories, raised on Qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓ (Kwantlen) territory of the Stó:lō peoples, and now reside and create on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) land, colonially named “Vancouver”.

I am passionate about bringing community together through shared art practice and experiences, especially within nature. In the future I dream of creating a salon space for creatives of all different forms to come together to celebrate our diversity and uplift voices / expressions that have historically been erased. A place for grief and joy. In the meantime, I work to build community through various styles of events when I have the energy to do so.

More coming soon…
